San Diego Offices Hold Sock and Food Drives for the Homeless
Smile Generation-approved offices Tierrasanta Dental Group, Stonecrest Dental Group and Orthodontics, Camino Dental Group, Gateway Dental Group and South Oceanside Dental Group in San Diego County joined forces to collect 1600 pairs of socks for the homeless of San Diego last October. The drive dubbed “Sock It to the Mission in Socktober” was spearheaded by Tierrasanta Dental Group’s Operations Manager Kevin Schieffer . Kevin relates the idea behind the Sock Drive: “Have you ever been camping and hiking? It is so great to put on a new pair of socks. I figured it must be even better for homeless people. I was talking with a homeless person one year and when I looked down at his feet and his socks were torn and full of holes. He said to me, I know they are ugly, but it is so nice to have socks. I thought, wow he would probably love a new clean pair. I called a local mission and asked what they thought if I started a sock drive. They said, socks are the second most requested item at a shelter , second to food. That is how I started holding sock drives.”
Kevin along with We Serve Manager Kyle Guerin and his associate Rachael Parker, delivered the socks to the San Diego Rescue Mission, where they also volunteered to serve lunch.
In November, Tierrasanta Dental Group collected 373 items of food during their food drive. The food drive items were delivered to Pastor Harrison Jr. from the Grace Covenant Christian Church for their C.L.I.M.B. program. The C.L.I.M.B. (Community Life Improvement Multicultural Bridging) program hands out food to the homeless and community members of San Diego that are in need of assistance.
