Tips for a Healthy Halloween

Halloween may not be the most-dentist-friendly holiday, but you can still have fun and enjoy the festivities if you take note of the following tips.

  • Feed your family a healthy dinner before they go trick-or-treating so they’re full and less tempted to reach into their candy bucket.
  • When purchasing candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters, choose kinds that you and your family do not like so you’re not tempted to sneak any while it’s in the house.
  • Keep the best, get rid of the rest. Since 30% of kids sort out their candy when they get done trick-or-treating,why not do something with those piles? Let your children keep their favorite pile(s), then rather than keeping the other piles that they’d just eat because they’re there, get rid of the rest. The remaining candy can be donated to a charity or food program, trashed, or best of all sold to their local dental office*!
Some of our Smile Generation offices will be participating in the Halloween Candy Buy Back program to benefit Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization whose mission is to “ lift morale, bring a smile to a service  member’s face and express to our Armed Forces the appreciation and  support of the American people,” by sending care packages and letters of appreciation to our troops. Children 12 and under can bring in their candy and sell 1lb of candy for $1. Kids can sell up to 5 lbs of candy during the designated event times. Event dates and times vary per office.
