National Women’s Health Week

Mark your calendars! Mother’s Day is March 14. But don’t just mark the day—mark the whole week! May 14-20, 2017 is National Women’s Health Week. Did you know an overwhelming amount of research links oral health with overall health? In fact, gum (periodontal) disease has been linked to several other health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and more. So if it’s been a while since your last appointment, be sure to schedule one today.

Here are some more tips, courtesy of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to help you take full advantage of National Women’s Health Week:

  • Schedule a well-woman visit, have that suspicious mole checked, ask about that unusual pain—this is the perfect time to take action on preventive screenings and any medical concerns.
  • Quit unhealthy behaviors like smoking, texting while driving, not wearing a seatbelt or bicycle helmet.
  • Stuck in the office? Organize a lunchtime walk with your coworkers. Start a friendly fitness competition tracking your steps, water intake, or other healthy activities.
  • Instead of sitting in a conference room, try scheduling a walking meeting. A little fresh air might even lend itself to some fresh ideas and more creative thinking.
  • Cook up something healthy! Share healthy recipes on social media, or find some new ones here.
  • Last but not least—smile! Research links smiling to lower stress, increased creativity and productivity.
