Holiday Toy Drive Benefits Toys for Tots

‘Tis the season and a number of Smile Generation-approved offices are holding a holiday toy drive for the benefit of Toys for Tots  until December 10th. Anyone who drops off a toy at a participating dental office, receives a discount on dentistry.  The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Here’s a little history about the program. Toys for Tots began in 1947, when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles,CA collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children.  The 1947 pilot project was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign.  That year, Marine Corps Reserve units across the nation conducted Toys for Tots campaigns in each community in which a Marine Reserve Center was located.  The Toys for Tots program’s objective is  to “bring the joy of Christmas to America’s needy children.”
