A Teenage Smile Saved on Smile Generation Serve Day
by Dr. Ashley Spooner
A true story from Smile Generation Serve Day: Dr. Ashley Spooner of Smile Generation®-trusted Falcon Park Dental Group in Highlands Ranch, Colo. recounts the story of how she and her office staff helped to change the life of a teenage patient through honesty, patience and an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime chance to receive complimentary dental work.
It is never easy to have to deliver difficult news to a patient, to tell someone something that they are not prepared to hear. This past April, I had one of these days. A 17-year-old girl who is getting ready to start her senior year in high school entered my office with her parents. They came to me looking for a second opinion because they wanted their daughter to have a camera-ready smile for her senior pictures. Her prior dentist had recommended veneers and the family was very concerned about the cost of this treatment, but remained hopeful that something similar could be done. After having closely examined her Digital X-rays, I knew that our conversation was going to be much different, and I had a big decision to make as to how to break the news to her and her family.
The patient was in need of much more work than had previously been advised. She had numerous cavities, periodontal (gum) disease, tooth decay, and the possibility of multiple root canals and maybe a tooth or two needing to be pulled. Her smile was going to require much more than veneers, in fact the total treatment needed would ultimately cost $35,000! Her parents wanted so badly to help her but they did not have the finances available to do so. After a brief moment of reflection, I decided to take on her case for Smile Generation Serve Day, a day when Smile Generation-trusted dentists nationwide perform free dental work for those in need.
With the help of my amazing team at Falcon Park Dental Group, we completed a full-mouth CEREC® rehabilitation consisting of 22 crowns, six veneers, and two root canals. The entire procedure took 15 hours to complete, but it was worth every moment of effort. This young girl, who was starting her senior year of high school and came to the office in tears because she was getting made fun of at school, is now a confident, proud young woman with a beautiful smile.
