Ask a Dentist: When is it time to get a new toothbrush?

Dr. Patel

Dr. Dhaval Patel, owner dentist from Pleasant Grove Dental Group and Orthodontics, a member of the Smile Generation family, in Roseville, CA answers this week’s questions.  One of our twitter followers asked: “What should we look for in a toothbrush?”  According to Dr. Patel, we should : “Choose a toothbrush with soft nylon bristles, which will last long and not hurt gums even after vigorous brushing. Select a toothbrush head that is small enough to access hard-to-reach areas. Keep in mind that there is no evidence that electronic toothbrushes work more effectively than conventional ones.” Ultimately, some people, like those with braces, may prefer using electric toothbrushes for their dental hygiene.

Facebook friend Jessica follows up with this question: “How do we know when it’s time to get a NEW toothbrush?”  Dr. Patel says it is best to replace your toothbrush once every three months or whenever the bristles are worn.
