Ask a Dentist: How can I enhance my smile for my wedding day pictures?
So the saying goes: “Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you will go.” This week our question comes from a June Bride. She emailed: “I am getting married this summer and I haven’t been to a dentist in over a year, what can I expect when I visit the dentist? How can I enhance my smile for my wedding day pictures?”
Dr. James Mallory, Jr. of Smile Generation-approved offices Festival Dental Group and Orthodontics, Arrowhead Dental Group, Every Kid’s Dentist and Canyon Modern Dentistry in Arizona, had these suggestions for our June Bride.
“If you haven’t been to the dentist in over a year then you should expect your appointment to include a full set of x-rays and a full exam. The exam consists of an oral cancer screening, cavity check, and periodontal disease screening. Plan for about 2 hours for the full exam process and to allow time for any treatment you may need or desire.
Often this type of patient is looking to whiten their teeth. You cannot whiten teeth in the presence of periodontal disease. If periodontal disease is present, be prepared to treat it. This usually includes scaling and root planing and laser therapy or local antibiotic treatment such as Arestin.
If you’re looking to enhance your smile but do not want to spend a lot of money then a product called snap-on smile is a good option. It’s a smile that you snap into place. It’s strictly for looks and not to be used for eating.
Your options may range from something as simple as whitening to more complex permanent treatment like veneers or crowns.”
Finally, Dr. Mallory advises: “Don’t be the person that shows up a week before the wedding. There will most likely not be enough time to accomplish what you desire. Rather, be sure to see your dentist with plenty of time prior to the big day!”
